LHA London Volunteer Scheme

Support our charity, gain valuable work skills, and receive free housing in Central London.

How it Helps

Reduce Costs, Build a Community

As a registered charity dedicated to relieving poverty, our volunteer program allows young people (aged 18+) to live in London for free in exchange for supporting daily hostel operations.

You will contribute a flexible **20 hours per week** (spread across reception hosting, housekeeping support, and general resident welfare). In return, you receive a free bed space in a shared room, free utilities, contents insurance, and daily meals (at catered hostels).

📌 Note: A minimum stay of 6 weeks (30 days) is required. Volunteers can stay for up to 2 years under the scheme. You must have the legal right to reside/work in the UK.

FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about the LHA volunteering scheme guidelines.

What duties are volunteers expected to perform?

Volunteers assist with the smooth running of our hostels. Common tasks include: helping at reception (answering resident questions, logging requests), supporting light housekeeping, assisting in the dining areas (at catered hostels), and organizing community welfare/social events. We work hard to align duties with your skills and goals!

What type of accommodation is provided?

We provide shared accommodations (typically twin rooms with shared bathrooms) in our central London hostels. All bedding is provided, and laundry facilities are available on-site. Roommates will always be of the same gender.

Can I work or study outside my volunteer hours?

Yes, absolutely. The 20 hours per week commitment is scheduled in shifts (often morning, evening, or weekend blocks), leaving you ample time to pursue university studies, online classes, or part-time employment.

What references are required for the application?

To ensure a safe environment for our young residents, all applicants must supply contact details for two non-family references (e.g. past employers, teachers, or professional managers) who can vouch for your character and reliability.
